Mini Series #7, Study of a Study...

Here is a 5"x5" study of a study.. John Singer Sargent's "Study for "The Prophets" a mural in the Boston area.  As I search scour thru all the images I can find of JSS's work for this self imposed project, I am deepening my appreciation. Let me ramble for sec.  Most are in awe of just his ability to trick the eye into a reality like viewing experience. I say that is only a truley great accomplishment because of the poetry of his lively brushwork. Proof that reality is not the end all be all, in fact it is absolutely nothing without the poetry. Let me know what you think?
Usually when I ask for opinions I get zero comments.. Lets make a New Years resolution together??  I ask for your opinion and you give it... OK?  Now go check out the auction, these look way better in person.

I give you the christmas gift of my opinion: these paintings are lovely. I agree that what is more interesting than a totally realistic portrayal is to have expressive painting. However sometimes that gets in the way when an artist gets too wrapped up in flourish or style. I think there is a balance, or maybe a question of intent when brushwork is concerned.

Wow!! I love this one, it really caught my eye and I had to have closer look!! The depth that you gave to this painting is very noticeable!
Oh, by the way I was riding up route 130 to head to work and saw you painting beside the road all bundled up!! I wanted to stop and introduce myself to you but it would have made me late for work.... another time.

i totally agree with what you say. perhaps it is the subject and the artist's individual response to it that dictates the brushwork?
btw, i was so inspired by your mini-series, i have started my own miniscule series... Velezquez.
thanks for the inspiration.

Felis Navidade Senior Colin, Thank you. Yeah you are totally right about questioning intent on the brushwork. Sargent seemed to have utility in mind when his brushwork was created, it seems organic.

hi Heidi, thank you! Yeah i was down at the dam in Bristol getting myself used to the winter that just arrived.. I am loving this snow, just enough. Hope to be by to do some more Russ Ann paintings before the snow on the side of the road gets too thick to paint there. I look forward to meeting in person.

hi Rahina, "minscule series" LOL.. That's a great name! And great Choice with Valasquez he has been one of my favs for a long time now. good luck With your series, i will be sure to check it out.

My first visit to your blog, and what do I find? Wonderful copies of one of my favorite painters. Poetic brushwork on this piece no doubt about it!
