The Year in Review

"Self Portrait 2015" 8x6"
2015 has been really good to me in ways that most other years were not, there were also some significant negatives though.. I have regular medical and dental care, I exercise five days a week and have a great woman in my life that I am very sure i do not deserve.. (no one does, she really is amazing.) ( I'm also pretty sure she won't read this, so its not for brownie points.)

Also I have been feeling more in control of paint and color than any other time in my life. There is a new feeling of excitement to see what comes off my easel this coming year. Not that I wasn't excited before but its different now, Ill try to explain it this coming year thru my painting.

Wasn't there negatives to complain about?? ... hmm.. Nah.

Happy New Year!

Charmed and Still Life Opening

"All The Donuts" 16x20"
"Oh Honeybear" 6x8"

On this Thanksgiving I'm feeling thankful for the charmed life I have been lucky enough to experience. Not charmed in the "I'm rich enough to frivolously buy sleeveless sweaters!"  or have driven a golf cart to go get my mail but in the little things and quirky art viewing experiences that have happened to me.

When I was very young, I vaguely remember (or imagined very well) seeing a very life like painting with a person wearing  red right in the middle of the image, not showing their face. My mother many years later told me she had brought me to the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum when I was a little kid. ( I was too young to know where I was, But that painting..! Oh boy, i remembered that.)  I connected the two, this painting was most likely the eventually stolen Vermeer. It is Vermeer's Quirkiest piece in my opinion. Worth Looking up.

Then Years ago, I was still doing odd jobs and proving that the only job i was gonna hold was painting (Long story there..)  Visiting Newport Rhode Island doing the tourist thing and walked into a gallery (sorry I forget the name) and the show up was a collection of the most beautiful, subtle color harmony filled gauche and oil sketches by William Trost Richards. ( I command !! you to look him up if you are not aware of his work) This show had everything from him, His sketchbooks, watercolors, Gouache, oil sketches, finished pieces even his easel and a self-portrait by him. I was blown away..  His plain air sketches would be of a simple wave, not a ferocious crashing wave, he did those also in his finished but of a simple non crashing wave.. These waves were just a vehicle to show you the harmony of greens, regal blues and soft grayed yellows. I remember thinking " There must be a thousand different colors in this piece!!" ha! They struck me and very much influenced my search for color change within a shape.

I am Also thankful that the show I'm part of (at the Landing Gallery here in Rockland) with three other very accomplished artists is finally opening tomorrow night! I have poured myself into this show and contributed 40 pieces to it. I really tried my best to listen to my tastes, be honest with myself (especially when it hurts) and make paintings I would want to see. I hope you can make it to the opening, if not I hope you enjoy the online presentation. I warn you though, I'm known for bad photography of my work.. :)
 Here is the gallery LINK.
Hopefully they will have the available work on their website soon. I will have it on my website by Saturday, here is a LINK.

Spooky Scary 2015

Spooky 12x16"

Lately I have been painting mostly still life, this piece "Spooky" was my effort at a indoor nocturne. I  had fun trying to keep the lit up parts saturated with color while being lighter than everything else. That left some great rich colors to be found in the values that the leaves in the foreground were in. The leaves are my favorite part. The blue bits in the background are stacks of canvases leaned against couch in the next room. Their abstract, barely recognizable, random shapes worked well and added to the color harmony so i included them.
The pumpkin used in this sketch was rescued from the rain after my friends had a pumpkin carving party. I was hoping to go back and paint the half dozen of the Jack-O-Lanterns together in their natural habitat, the edge of the porch but the weather had other plans..

Upcoming show, November 14th at The Landing Gallery right here in Rockland. I will have more info on that very soon.

Happy Halloween!

Workshop and Monthly Demo/Class Announcement

Family Day 14x10

Every Second Sunday of the month Ill be hosting a drop in, plain air painting demo/class. I will post the location here and on my Class blog a few days ahead of time to give you a heads up. The price for this demo/class will be $25. The demo will be approximately 2 hours and will be followed by questions and conversation about your work or painting in general. Please, bring a chair and work to discuss.

Next year, 2016! I will be hosting three, two day long, workshops. The workshops will be focusing on paint handling, composition/abstract language. (Dates to be determined, A spring, Summer and Fall Class) These will not be run thru a workshop program company, The cost will be affordable and leave room financially for you to enjoy the area(maybe an upgraded hotel room.?.)  and bring fresh brushes :) More info to come.
Please feel free to contact me if you'd like more info and have a window of time that would be best for you. If enough people like a certain window of dates, I can set the date there. Easy Breezy

The painting above "Family Day" 14x10" shows a clear pattern of light and dark as the frame of its composition. This is the composition you might see across the room. Upon closer inspection you will see highlights or more intense colors to lead you thru the painting in a different pattern. Finally, slight variations in the shadows help entertain your eye along the dark pattern while viewing up close.  Notice how many ways your eye can travel thru this painting.  I picked this painting as an example for that exact reason. They don't always turn out with strong compositions but a good dark/light pattern gives you a great chance at  it.

 Thanks for stopping by

Bulb

This sketch was an attempt at capturing that semi glowing color that lightbulbs seem to have in almost any lighting situation. Sometimes the color harmony within an object is like a perfect conversation.

This painting was the result of relating colors and pushing temperature as far as possible.. I have a lot of fun when paintings like this one are being made. Let me know what you think.
